Meet The Breeds!
You've met Charlie, he's our Wheaten Marans rooster.  Now meet Charlie's angels.  While an extremely gorgeous bird, Marans are best known for laying dark eggs.  Marans are a French breed that is very rare in the U.S.  Our flock of Wheaten Marans are Ron Presley's Cottage Hill Line.  When orderring eggs from this breed, we work very close with Ron to fill both his and our orders.  Wheaten Marans can be color sexed at about two to three weeks of age.  The male chick will develope the mahogany colors on his back.  At maturity, the male has the golden cape with a distinctive mahogany colored triangle in the wing when folded to his side, as in the photo of Charlie.  Females are a straw color with white underfluff, black tips on the wings and tail, and a gold to a mahagony colored neck.  The neck may have some black flecks of feathering.  These birds have pearl colored beak and legs.  The shanks may range from heavy to no feathering on them at all.  Refer to some of our friends on our "Contact" page to view some other types of Marans.

Below are some two day old Wheaten chicks on the left.  Although not for sure, the male chick is believed to be the one on the left due to the black in his wing feathers.  On the right you will find some Wheaten chicks at two weeks of age.  The male is definetly the one on the left.  Note the dark band of wing feathers in comparison to the straw or Wheaten colored female on the right.
