The Cottage Hill Line of Black Copper Marans

     This beautiful line of Black Copper Marans exhibit all the correct characteristics for the French Standard of this breed of Marans.  The males have a mahogany cape of hackle feathers with a trim of gold at the base.  The females exhibit the mahogany red hackle feathers as well.  We are happy to report that 95% of the chicks hatched in this line exhibited colors that match the one in the photo above.  The males of this line have always reproduced correctly.  The hackles of a Black Copper Marans female should be mahogany red and not gold.  This coloring in the hackles should never leak into the breast feathering of either the male or female of this variety of Marans.  The Black Copper Marans should exhibit black legs and beaks with pearl undertones.  These birds are decent layers and have a calm temperment.  They are good layers of nice dark eggs averaging about a 7 on the French Marans Egg Chart.  The photo above is a bowl of Marans eggs from both the Wheaten and Black Copper variety of Marans here on the Farm.  Backwoods Poultry Farm is the sole owner and breeder of this line of Black Copper Marans.
